Company Name Requirements
■Must end in "Limited" or "Ltd"
All Hong Kong private limited companies must include "Limited" or "Ltd" at the end of their English name.
■Chinese name must end in "有限公司"
If you register a Chinese company name, it must end with 有限公司. A Chinese name is optional but recommended for local banking.
■Cannot be identical to an existing company
The Companies Registry will reject any name that is identical to a company already on the register, including names in the process of being registered.
■Cannot contain restricted words without approval
"Bank", "Trust", "Insurance", "Chamber of Commerce", "Government", and "Municipal" require prior approval from the relevant authority.
■Cannot be offensive or misleading
Names that are offensive, suggest a connection with the government, or mislead the public about the nature of the business will be rejected.
Tips for Choosing a Good Name
Keep it short and memorable — long names are harder to use on invoices, bank forms, and contracts.
Avoid generic names like 'Asia Trading Limited' — they are likely already taken and lack brand identity.
Consider registering both an English and Chinese name for easier banking in Hong Kong.
Check domain name availability alongside your company name for consistent branding.
Avoid names too similar to well-known brands to prevent trademark disputes.
